What is it?

Behind the name “IT Security Girls” hides an unprecedented school work group of St Lioba School in Bad Nauheim. You can join us, if you are a schoolgirl in the 7th–10th grade and if you want to experience something special. Because part of the work group is a five-day boot camp!

It is a pilot project that will launch in Bad Nauheim. The plan is that other schools in other regions will also benefit from it in the future.

But those who participate this year will be the first IT-Security Girls ever!

What will I be doing there?

Viruses and worms, hackers and spear phishing emails: The Internet is full of dangers or uninvited guests. Cybercrime sucks! For businesses, this can even be dangerous. As an IT-Security Girl, you will learn about new and exciting fields of IT-security and you will learn how to recognise uninvited intruders. Best of all: This does not necessarily involve computer sciences or programming, but logic and a little feel for the tools that need to be used.

We will show you interesting things from your surroundings that accompany you every day, but of which you (still) have no idea: For example, how the internet and networks really work.

You will learn what data flows there and how easily it can be read by others. You will realise how open many people are, what tracks they leave and why it is important to protect personal data and networks. Of course, we will also show you how you can establish this protection. As a result, you will gain new knowledge that is otherwise not easy to come by. You will discover a whole new world – we promise!

At the end of the boot camp, you will be an IT-Girl for information technology and data protection: a real “IT-Security Girl”!

Who is doing this and why?

The idea stems from Ute Schremser of St Lioba School and Gordon Kirstein of the company movetech in Bad Nauheim.

1.000.000

IT experts will be required by the end of 2020 throughout Europe according to the EU Commission.

200.000

of those are IT-security experts. We assume that this number is even higher!

2

Girls who have applied for a work-study programme/education at, for example, movetech since 2004.

Why only Girls?

We believe that the necessary spirit is not yet present in mixed groups at that age and boys and girls tick in very different ways.

And we find that there are too few female applicants in the field of IT security. This is to change!

It is not a “Girls Club” or the like. But if one emerges from it – hey, why not?

And before parents of boys decide to complain about discrimination -> §5 AGG.

What can I do about cybercrime?

After the work group, you will have a lot of ammunition against risks and dangers on the internet. You will generally know how and why data and networks need to be protected, how this protection can be implemented and how important common sense is in the field of IT security. You will learn that laziness, turning a blind eye and ignorance are not good ideas!

You will be the one to educate your friends, family and acquaintances about issues concerning data protection and IT security and you will be able to help them. And maybe you will also be able to use your knowledge in smaller teams in one or two smaller companies or help independent entrepreneurs right here in this region – we are working on clarifying that.

In summary: By the end, you will know more about IT security and data protection than the majority of people around you (relatives/acquaintances/friends, including quite a few IT administrators).

of all companies in the European Union are small and medium-sized enterprises, so-called SMEs.

of those small or medium-sized enterprises have 10 or less employees.

of all SMEs that are victims of a cyberattack do not recover and must close their operation.

What do I need for this?

No devices: movetech and its partners will provide the necessary hardware and make it available to the work group free of charge. You will get your own laptop during the work group and the boot camp!

Time: Two hours per week in the work group, probably always tht eighth and ninth hour. And, of course, the five days and four nights for the boot camp 21-25/04/2021 at the Donnerskopf.

Commitment: Admittedly, it will initially be a fairly steep learning curve. Therefore, it may be useful to additionally re-read or review one or two things at home. However, there will be no homework, except for a few exceptions.

Can participate in the work group even if I do not attend the boot camp?

Theoretically yes, but makes no sense: We will teach you the really exciting, in-depth and demanding things during the boot camp. The entire work group is a kind of warm-up programme for it. The actual “intensive training” then takes place during the boat camp.

This means: If you already know that you cannot make it to the boot camp, you should consider joining us next year!

THE ONLY THING

THAT CAN STOP A BAD GUY ON THE INTERNET

IS A GOOD GIRL ON THE INTERNET

Will I be a hacker afterwards?

Definitely not! In Germany, it is prohibited to train hackers and in essence, we will do nothing illegal and we will explain the exact limits to you.

Naturally, however, we will show you what types of hackers there are – here it is greatly simplified: Black Hat (= the evil ones), Grey Hat (= borderline), White Hat (= the good ones). You will learn why this does not always have to be negative. The best example of this is are the many members of the Chaos Computer Club who regularly interfere in current political affairs with their substantiated expertise.

But yes, some tools used by IT-security experts are identical to those used by hackers.

In this sense, we proceed in the same way as in the world of Harry Potter: “Death Eaters” and members of the “Order of the Phoenix” all use wands. You will learn to use the tools like someone from the Order and you will also learn why the other side is in no way worth it!

And if anything, then we want to make you into a “Pink Hat” 😉

Where does the idea come from?

This is a longer story: As mentioned above, the European Commission already knows that by the end of 2020, approximately one million IT experts will be needed throughout Europe. And of those, at least 200,000 need to be IT-security experts (We think more along the lines of >500,000, as most companies do not even know that they need experts in this field). That is why in 2018, the European Commission initiated a work group in Brussels to develop concepts on the subject of “How do we get more experts in the field of IT, especially for SMEs?”.

The company movetech participated in a work group on the topic of “Skills for Cybersecurity” alongside other fellow-minded campaigners. However, the recently published results and the resulting measures that need to be established by the European Commission are aimed more in the long-term direction of 2030 and onwards.

But we find that the world needs help against things like cybercrime, ransomware and mistakes due to ignorance as quickly as possible!

And that is why we are calling on you now 🙂
